Former world No. 1 Amit Panghal and world championships bronze medallist Shiva Thapa advanced to the quarter-finals of men’s National Boxing Championships 2023 in Shillong on Wednesday.
Competing in the 51kg, Amit Panghal defeated Jayshandeep Singh 4-1 in the round of 16. The 28-year-old Indian boxer, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, is set to face Mohammad Aarif in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Shiva Thapa, who suffered a first-round exit at the Asian Games 2023 boxing event, demonstrated his prowess in 63.5kg with a commanding 5-0 victory over Santhosh HK. Thapa will now face Shashank Pradhan in the quarter-finals.
The 2021 Asian champion Sanjeet (92kg) dominated Sawan Gill to secure a commanding 5-0 victory. Sanjeet will face Naman Tanwar in the quarters.
Tokyo Olympian Ashish Kumar (80kg) got the better of his opponent Nitish Kumar. Ashish wasted no time and bagged a first-round knockout victory against his opponent with aggressive boxing. The Tokyo Olympian is now set to face Lakshya in the quarter-finals.
A total of over 350 boxers across 13 weight categories are participating in the championships. The Shillong meet is the seventh edition of the men’s National Boxing Championships.
