National Boxing Championships 2023: Shiva Thapa, Amit Panghal and Sagar punch their way into finals

Reigning champion Shiva Thapa will defend his national crown in the 63.5kg category against Vanshaj while Amit Panghal will face Anshul Punia in the 51kg gold medal bout.

Former world No. 1 Amit Panghal, veteran Indian boxer Shiva Thapa and Sagar powered their way into the finals of their respective weight categories at the men’s National Boxing Championships 2023 in Shillong on Friday.

Six-time Asian Championships medallist Shiva Thapa showcased his experience as he secured a commanding 5-0 victory over Harivansh Tawari in the 63.5kg semi-finals. Reigning champion Shiva Thapa will defend his crown against Vanshaj on Saturday.

On the other hand, Amit Panghal went head to head against Ankit in the 51kg semis. The bout was closely contested throughout but the highly experienced 28-year-old Amit Panghal maintained his composure in the crucial moments of the bout to pick up a 5-2 split decision win. The 2019 world championships silver medalist will now face Anshul Punia in the final.

In another gripping encounter, Sagar faced Vishal Kumar in the +92kg semi-finals. Sagar's power-packed punches were on full display as he dominated the match, securing the victory with a 5-0 score. The 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallist will face off against Jaipal Singh in the gold medal match.

In other categories, the 2021 Asian champion Sanjeet (92kg) got the better of his opponent Vicky to make the gold medal bout. Sanjeet was at the top of his game and dominated the bout to grab the win by unanimous decision. Sanjeet will be up against Naveen Kumar in the final. 

Barun Singh (48kg), Pawan (54kg), Sachin (57kg), Akash (60kg), Vanshaj (63.5kg), Rajat (67kg), Akash (71kg), Deepak (75kg), Lakshya (80kg) and Jugnoo (86kg) also made their respective finals.

The championships saw over 350 boxers compete across 13 weight categories. The Shillong meet is the seventh edition of the men’s National Boxing Championships.
