Former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth, Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen and current India No. 1 HS Prannoy will be in action at the National Badminton Championships 2023 at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune. The tournament is scheduled from February 22 to 28.
This will be the 84th edition of India’s senior national badminton championships. Around 450 shuttlers are slated to participate at the Balewadi Stadium. The inter-state team championships will be held on the opening two days. The individual championships will be held from February 24 onwards.The nationals will be live streamed.
The events to be contested are men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles, along with the mixed team championship.
The last edition of the badminton nationals was held in February 2019. Saina Nehwal defeated PV Sindhu for the women’s singles crown. Sourabh Verma emerged as the men’s singles champion. The senior nationals were not held for the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Chirag Shetty clinched the men’s doubles title in 2019 after beating top seeds MR Arjun and Shlok Ramchandran in the final. Shikha Gautam-Ashwini Bhat K and Manu Attri-K Maneesha won the women’s and mixed doubles titles, respectively.
The upcoming edition will also see the badminton nationals return to Pune after 26 years. The Maharashtrian city last hosted the tournament back in 1997.
Besides HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen, Malvika Bansod and Parupalli Kashyap will be the other big names in singles. Defending champion Sourabh Verma, former world championships bronze medallist B Sai Praneeth and Sameer Verma will also play.
A total of 479 entries – including youngsters Mithun Manjunath, Kiran George and Priyanshu Rajawat – have registered for the tournament.
Other notable badminton players include All England semi-finalists women’s doubles combination of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly, men’s doubles specialists Chirag Shetty, Dhruv Kapila, Krishna Prasad and Vishnuvardhan Goud.
Seven teams will fight for the team championship along with the individual championships at the National Badminton Championships 2023.
