Nafissatou Thiam made history as she landed a second pentathlon European Indoor Championships title on Friday (5 March).

The reigning heptathlon Olympic champion's score of 4904 points is not only a world lead for 2021, but also surpassed Tia Hellebaut's Belgian record.

Thiam's victory in Torun, Poland was made all the more impressive by the fact that she missed her national indoor championships last month after contracting the coronavirus.

That victory underlines the 26-year-old's status as the favourite to win heptathlon gold again at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics later this year.

Elsewhere, Portuguese shot putter Auriol Dongmo won her first European title with a mark of 19.34m, while Amy-Eloise Markovic of Great Britain clinched a thrilling women's 3,000m race in 8:46:43.

The Brit finished just 0.11 seconds ahead of France's Alice Finot in second.

Greece's Miltiadis Tentoglou won the men's long jump with a world-leading leap of 8.35m, while Tomas Stanek of the Czech Republic threw a season's best 21.62m to take his first major shot put crown.

There was high drama in the final event of the night, where defending men's 1500m champion and European record holder Jakob Ingebrigsten finished first, but was subsequently disqualified.

Three-time European indoor champion Marcin Lewandowski was awarded the win, but a Norwegian appeal proved successful with Ingebrigtsen reinstated to gold in a time of 3:37.56.
