Given the grim situation in Mumbai following the second wave of COVID-19, the Tata Mumbai Marathon organisers have decided to postpone the 2021 edition, again.

The 17th edition of the race, which usually takes place on the third Sunday of January, was pushed to May 30 following the pandemic’s onslaught across major Indian cities.

But with Mumbai experiencing a surge in cases over the past few weeks, Procam International, the race promoters, have been forced to defer the marathon again.

“As we navigate these challenging times, we want you to know that we are leaving no stone unturned to make the marathon possible this year,” joint managing director of Procam International Vivek Singh said.

“The Mumbai Marathon has a special place in our hearts. The government of Maharashtra and our partners have been extremely supportive to ensure that we have the best possible option, keeping in mind the safety and security for all involved,” said Singh.

Mumbai Marathon, a World Athletics Elite Label Road Race, would have acted as a qualifier for the Tokyo Olympics if it had been held before the cut off date of May 31.

Mumbai reported 8,839 new cases on Friday, pushing the total to nearly 560,000, of which 85,226 are active cases, as per the local civic body.
