Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21's second fixture on November 21 will see Mumbai City FC (MCFC) kickstart their ISL season 7 campaign against NorthEast United FC at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Goa.
With City Football Group - owners of Premier League giants Manchester City - acquiring majority stakes in the club midway through last season, the Islanders have invested heavily in the squad for the upcoming season.
Former FC Goa head coach Sergio Lobera will be taking over the coaching duties of the team from former head coach Jorge Costa. The Spaniard was responsible for making Goa a force to be reckoned with in the ISL and will look to have a similar effect for the Islanders.
The Spaniard will reunite with several of his former FC Goa players at Mumbai, with Mandar Rao Dessai, Hugo Boumous, Ahmed Jahouh and Mourtada Fall following him to Mumbai City FC. Incidentally, MCFC’s second fixture of ISL 2020-21 will be against FC Goa on November 25.
Midfielder Hernan Santana will be another player Lobera will be very familiar with, having coached the 30-year-old when he was in charge of Spanish club Las Palmas. Santana has joined Mumbai on loan from Spanish second division side Sporting Gijon.
Mumbai have also retained the services of some key players like goalkeeper Amrinder Singh, midfielders Rowllin Borges and Raynier Fernandes and defender Sarthak Golui.
The biggest additions, however, have been up top. The signing of the young Farukh Choudhary from Jamshedpur represents a smart piece of business. The nippy Indian forward will have two very established foreign strikers for company.
Former PSG star and Nigerian international Bartholomew Ogbeche has already proved himself on Indian soil, having scored 27 goals in his 34 ISL appearances for NorthEast United and Kerala Blasters in the last two seasons.
Former Reading striker Adam Le Fondre, meanwhile, is set for his maiden campaign in India but arrives on Indian soil with a stellar scoring record in various tiers of English football, including the Premier League. He was also the second-highest scorer in the A-League last season, en route to helping Sydney Wanderers to the title.
England-born Japanese midfielder Cy Goddard will be Mumbai's seventh foreigner in ISL 2020-21. The Tottenham youth product is still just 23 and has played for Japan at youth levels.
Mumbai City FC will play a total of 10 matches until January 11. Rest of the fixtures will be announced later.
