Most runs in Cricket World Cup 2023: List of the highest individual run-scorers

The ICC Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 was held in India. The 13th edition of the ODI Cricket World Cup began on October 5 and eventually saw Australia clinch their sixth title by defeating India in the final played on November 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

There was considerable interest among fans during the tournament that saw India claim 10 victories on the bounce before losing the final. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma led India from the front in the entire campaign and were the top two players who scored the most runs in Cricket World Cup 2023.

In fact, With 765 runs from 11 matches, Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's record for most runs in a single edition. The Little Master had 673 runs to his name in the 2003 edition. Kohli was named the Player of the Tournament.

New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra, meanwhile, scored the most runs in a Cricket World Cup by a debutant in the 2023 edition.

Seven players, including three Indians and two New Zealanders, crossed the 500-run mark at the ODI World Cup 2023. David Warner (535) was the leading scorer for champions Australia.

Most runs in World Cup 2023

Glenn Maxwell, meanwhile, recorded the highest individual score of the World Cup 2023 when he smashed 201 not out (128 balls) against Afghanistan. Mitchell Marsh had the second-highest score of an unbeaten 177 (132 balls) against Bangladesh. Both the knocks came during the league stages.

India captain Rohit Sharma smashed the most sixes at the ODI World Cup 2023 with 31 hits over the fence, followed by compatriot Shreyas Iyer with 24.

Having started in 1975, ODI Cricket World Cups are held once every four years. As a result, finishing as the top run-scorer in a Cricket World Cup is a rare honour - one which only 11 cricket players have been able to achieve to date.

New Zealand’s Glenn Turner, with 333 runs in just four matches, was the highest individual run scorer at the inaugural Men’s ODI World Cup in 1975, hosted by England.

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, meanwhile, remains the only player to have scored the most runs in a Cricket World Cup more than once. The Little Master led the scoring charts with 523 runs in the 1996 World Cup and in 2003, he piled up 673 runs.

In fact, Sachin Tendulkar’s 673 runs from 10 matches at the 2003 World Cup in South Africa stood as the record for the most runs scored by an individual batter in a single ODI Cricket World Cup before Virat Kohli broke it in 2023.

Sachin Tendulkar is also the highest run scorer in ODI World Cup history with 2,278 runs in 44 innings across five editions. The tally includes six centuries and an astonishing 15 half centuries. Virat Kohli is second on the list with 1795 runs from 37 innings and is followed by Australia’s Ricky Ponting on the list with 1,743 runs from 42 innings.

A total of three New Zealand batters - Glenn Turner (1975), Martin Crowe (1992) and Martin Guptill (2015) - and four Indians - Sachin Tendulkar (1996 and 2003), Rahul Dravid (1999) and Rohit Sharma (2019), Virat Kohli (2023) - have been the top run-getters at different World Cup editions.

West Indies icon Gordon Greenidge (1979), England’s David Gower (1983) and Graham Gooch (1987), Australia’s Matthew Hayden (2007) and Sri Lankan Tillakaratne Dilshan (2011) are the other four in the illustrious club.
