Slalom queen Mikaela Shiffrin breaks FIS Ski World Cup record

Double Olympic gold medallist Mikaela Shiffrin is truly in a league of her own.

The American stormed to her 15th Alpine Ski World Cup victory of the season in Czech resort Spindleruv Mlyn, to break the record for wins in one season set by Swiss legend Vreni Schneider in 1988/89.

"Today I wanted to ski with risk and it was really fun to ski both runs," Shiffrin said afterwards.

Switzerland's Wendy Holdener finished second (+ 0''85), while upcoming Slovakian star Petra Vlhova sealed third.

Five-time world Champion Shiffrin seemed a bit tentative at the start of the course, but made up for it on the rest of her final run to keep Holdener at bay.

Budding rival Vlhova meanwhile, had to settle for third after a disappointing first run.

Best yet to come?

One of the most impressive aspects of Shiffrin's dominance is her age.

On Saturday, the Colorado native sealed her 58th World Cup victory, just four days before her 24th birthday.

"If she stays healthy, she will break many more records, she is still so young." Schneider told Olympic Channel.

"She is the most versatile skier on the circuit.

"I think she will be the greatest of all time."

Shiffrin's 39th slalom victory means only Ingemar Stenmark has won more in the event with 40 wins.

An amazing year

In December at the Super G in Lake Louise (Canada), Shiffrin became one of seven women to have won in all five disciplines and she ended 2018 with the most wins in a calendar year (15).

In Are (Sweden), the American made more history by collecting an unprecedented fourth consecutive gold in slalom at the World Championships, despite fighting with a chest cold.

She was crowned overall World Cup champion for the third-straight year on 4 March as scheduled races in Sochi fell victim to the weather, adding to her third-consecutive slalom crystal globe.

The American superstar is hoping to clinch the tightly contested Super-G globe as well, which will be up for grabs next week in Andorra.
