2022 World 400m champion Michael Norman will not compete at the upcoming World Athletics Championships, set to begin Saturday (19 August) in Budapest, Hungary.

The American had been struggling with injury thoughout the 2023 season. Norman announced Tuesday (15 August 2023) on his Instagram that he would skip the global meet and shift his focus to next year's 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

"Unfortunately I will not be defending my title at the 2023 World champs," Norman wrote in the post. "After an extremely frustrating season I’ve decided to step away from track for the remainder of the 2023 season in order to refocus for the 2024 Paris Olympics."

At the Tokyo 2020 Games, Norman helped Team USA win gold in the men's 4x400 relay. He was also a member of the gold-medal winning 4x400m relay at last year's Worlds in Eugene, Oregon.
