Record six-time Asian medalist Shiva Thapa and Commonwealth Games 2022 bronze medalist Rohit Tokas progressed to the quarter-finals of their respective weight categories at the Men's National Boxing Championships 2022 in Hisar on Monday.
Representing Assam, Shiva Thapa (63.5kg) beat Jaswinder Singh of Delhi in his round of 16 bout by unanimous decision. The 2015 world championships bronze medallist will face the winner of the bout between Sanu T of Kerala and Ashutosh Kumar of Punjab in his quarter-final on Wednesday.
Rohit Tokas (67kg), representing Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB), got the better of Jai Singh of Chhattisgarh with an equally impressive performance to win 5-0. The Indian boxer will take the ring against the winner of the bout between Nishchaya and Aman Duhan in the quarters.
The 2019 Asian Games silver medallist Ashish Kumar (80kg) also made it past the round of 16 stage after defeating Rajasthan's Sumit Poonia 5-0.
Sachin (57kg), a 2016 world youth champion, also prevailed in his bout against Neeraj of Haryana. The RSPB pugilist overpowered his opponent 5-0 to set up a round of 16 clash against S Sahil on Tuesday.
Shivam Tiwari (60kg) registered a thumping 5-0 victory against Telangana's Savio Michael to advance to the round of 16, where he will face off against Prashant Yadav of Delhi.
While Rushikesh Goud (57kg) of Maharashtra cruised past Sonu of Bihar with a 5-0 win, Pavan Kumar N (51kg) of Karnataka triumphed over Pawan Kumar Arya of Uttarakhand with the same scoreline.
A total of 386 boxers across 13 different weight categories are participating in the Men's National Boxing Championships 2022.
