India will be one of the 10 teams in the fray at the Men's Junior Asia Cup 2023 hockey tournament, scheduled to take place from May 23 to June 1 in Salalah, Oman.
The matches of the 10th edition of the Under-21 hockey tournament will be live streamed in India.
The Indian junior men’s hockey team is in Pool A along with Pakistan, Japan, Thailand and Chinese Taipei. Korea, Malaysia, Oman, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan make up Pool B.
The top five teams – India, Pakistan, Japan, Korea and Malaysia – received a direct entry on the basis of their rankings. Meanwhile, Bangladesh, Oman, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Chinese Taipei sealed their berths from the Men’s Junior AHF Cup held in Muscat, Oman, in January.
After single-legged round-robin matches, the top two teams from both pools will qualify for the semi-finals while the teams in third and fourth positions will compete for the 5-8 place classification. The teams finishing in the fifth place in both pools will go head-to-head to avoid finishing in the tenth place.
The semis will be played on May 31 and the third-place match and the final will be held on June 1.
Reigning junior Asia Cup hockey champions India will be led by Uttam Singh and Boby Singh Dhami will be the vice-captain. India will play their first match against Chinese Taipei on May 24. The India vs Pakistan hockey match is scheduled on May 27.
The Men's Junior Asia Cup 2023 will be a qualifying event for the upcoming FIH Junior Men's World Cup 2023, which is set to be played in Malaysia from December 5 to 16 this year.
The top three finishers in the Men's Junior Asia Cup 2023, along with hosts Malaysia, will qualify for the quadrennial event.
The Indian men’s junior team will go into the tournament on the back of their victory at the 10th Sultan of Johor Cup last year, where India defeated Australia in the final via a penalty shootout.
Before leaving for Oman, the India Colts were training at SAI, Bengaluru, where they played a few matches against the senior India team.
