Tumbling records have been the story of the Australian Olympic swimming trials all week, and the final day of action in Adelaide was no different.

Within three races - women's 200m backstroke, men's 100m butterfly and women's 800m freestyle - three Australian records were broken, with Kaylee McKeown also breaking the Commonwealth record in the former.

McKeown was the first record-breaker as she stormed home in 2:04.28s - the fastest time in the world this year. The mark came only four days after she beat the world record in the 100m backstroke.

"Definitely hurt a lot in the last 15 metres but got to the wall at the end of a long week," the swimmer from Redcliffe exclaimed.

Next up it was the turn of Matt Temple in the 100m butterfly who touched the wall in 50.45s, beating the former record of 50.85s that had stood since 2009. The race also saw Australian pop star Cody Simpson's Tokyo 2020 dreams come to an end, as he finished last in the final.

The last of the trio of national records went to Ariarne Titmus in the 800m freestyle, who also secured her third win of the trials.

"It’s good to come out on the last night and do an 800," she said. "It’s tough after a 200, I’m happy to do a PB."

Emma McKeon beats Cate Campbell in 50m freestyle final

In one of the most high-anticipated events of the evening, Emma McKeon just got the better of Cate Campbell in the 50m freestyle final. McKeon finished just 0.01 seconds ahead of Campbell to win the race in 23.93s - just marginally off the world record of 23.67s.

The final race of the night - and indeed the trials - saw Jack McLoughlin win the 1500m freestyle in 14:52.69s to book his ticket to the Games. It came after Cam McEvoy won the 50m freestyle in 22.07s but failed to meet the Olympic qualifying time of 21.77s by less than half a second.

The Australian swimming team looks to be in world-beating form with just over a month to go until the Tokyo 2020 Olympics begin.

The Tokyo 2020 swimming competition begins on 24 July 2021 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
