Canada’s Maude Charron looked every inch a champion-in-waiting throughout the women’s 64kg competition at Tokyo's International Forum on 27July.

The 28-year-old, who was making her Olympic debut, lead every round in the snatch, where she lifted 105kg, and clean and jerk with 131kg, to walk away with 236 points and the gold medal.

Her nearest rivals were Italy’s Giorgia Bordignon, 34, on 232 points and Chinese Taipei’s CHEN Wen-Huei, who claimed bronze with 230 points. The 24-year-old was the winner of the Asian Championships in the event.

It was a great competition and a good battle and I am very proud

Great Britain’s Sarah Davies, 28, and Colombia’s Mercedes Isabel Perez Tigrero, 33, were both emotional after just missing out on a Tokyo 2020 medal on 227 points each.

Speaking after the competition a delighted Charron said: "It was a great competition and a good battle and I am very proud."
