Mathieu Faivre laid down an impressive pair of runs to win the men's Giant Slalom alpine ski World Cup race in Bansko, Bulgaria on Sunday (28 February).

It was a first World Cup win in four years for the Frenchman, who agonisingly finished second in Saturday's Giant Slalom race.

But Faivre ensured there was no doubt this time, with the fastest time in both the first and second runs for the first time in his career.

Marco Odermatt finished 0.75 seconds back in second, to move up to second in the overall rankings.

The Swiss starlet is now just 45 points behind overall leader Alexis Pinturault of France, who finished this race in third.

The French men occupied three of the top four spots, with Thibaut Favrot just missing out on the podium.

Filip Zubcic, possibly suffering the aftereffects of his Giant Slalom victory 24-hours earlier, was well down the chasing pack in 14th position.

"I'm really happy about the race, and now I'm going to have some rest!" a visibly exhausted Faivre said after.

Fresh from winning two gold medals at the Cortina 2021 world championships, he now moves up to fifth in the Giant Slalom season standings with two races remaining.

Earlier on Sunday, Lara Gut-Behrami sealed the women's Super G Crystal Globe at Val di Fassa.
