Marta and Toni Pressley are getting married, making their years-long relationship official.

The Brazilian football star posted the announcement to her two-million plus Instagram following on 4 January.

Pressley plays as a defender for the Orlando Pride in Florida and they have been teammates since 2017.

Marta is considered by many the best female footballer there's ever been: The 34-year-old won Olympic silver medals at the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Games, scoring 10 goals, and was World Cup runner-up in 2007.

She's the first person ever in the men's or women's game to score at five different World Cup tournaments, scoring a record 17 goals, and has been awarded the FIFA Player of the Year Award six times.

Pressley has been a cornerstone of the Pride defence since 2016 when the team joined the National Women's Soccer League and has played with the U.S. national team at underage level all the way from U17 to U23.

Overcoming cancer

The couple have been through tough times together, in 2019 Pressley was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double masectomy.

By the end of the 2019 season, she was back playing again.

"I think, in general, we’re all a lot stronger than we think we are and we can overcome almost anything," Pressley told AP in October.

"I’ve certainly learned that with going through having breast cancer, that I don’t think we’re given anything we can’t handle.”

Pressley is 30 and Marta 34, and they won't be the only married couple on the team in Orlando: World Cup winners Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger have been married since December 2019.
