Malaysia's badminton superstar Lee Chong Wei has been diagnosed with early-stage nose cancer.
The triple Olympic silver medallist is responding well to treatment in Taiwan, according to sports officials.
"In response to recent reports concerning Lee Chong Wei, BAM confirms that the player has been diagnosed with early stage nose cancer," said Badminton Association of Malaysia president (BAM) Seri Norza Zakaria in a statement on Saturday, ending weeks of speculation about the health of the former world No. 1.
"Chong Wei is currently in Taiwan seeking treatment, and I am pleased to inform you that he is responding well to his treatment and is currently resting and recuperating amongst family and close friends."
No more rumours
The 35-year-old is expected to be returning home at the end of September after his treatment is completed.
There were a lot of rumours going around when Lee stopped training in July.
He subsequently pulled out of the World Championships in China and Asian Games in Indonesia. BAM said, he was suffering from a “respiratory-related disorder” and taking a break from badminton at that time.
Lee is currently ranked number 4 in the world. He bounced back strongly after returning from a doping ban in 2015.
The Malaysian icon had tested tested positive for a forbidden anti-inflammatory drug at the 2014 world championships.
He has won 69 international titles in his stellar career.
