Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen will lead India’s challenge at the Madrid Spain Masters 2024 badminton tournament starting on Tuesday.
Sindhu, 11th in the badminton rankings, is yet to win a title on the BWF World Tour this season but helped India win the gold medal at the Badminton Asia Team Championships. Sindhu competed at the Swiss Open last week and reached the round of 16.
At Madrid Spain Masters, a BWF Super 300 event, Sindhu has been seeded second behind top-seed and Rio 2016 Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain. India’s Malvika Bansod and Ashmita Chaliha will also compete in women’s singles.
The men’s singles will see two Indian badminton players - Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth - among the top eight seeds.
Lakshya Sen, seeded fifth, will take on world No. 39 Takuma Obayashi of Japan. Sen made it to the quarter-finals at the French Open and All England Open but was knocked out in the second round at the Swiss Open.
On the other hand, Srikanth reached the semi-finals at the Swiss Open last week for his first appearance in the last four of a BWF World Tour event since November 2022. He is seeded seventh in the men’s singles.
India’s Kiran George and Sathish Kumar Karunakaran are also in the fray.
In the absence of the world No. 1 men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, India will be represented by MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila in the category. MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila have been seeded eighth and will be up against Mexico’s Job Castillo and Luis Montoya. Krishna Prasad Garaga and KS Pratheek will also compete.
In the women’s doubles category, third seed Tanisha Castro and Ashwini Ponnappa will face a qualifying team in the first round. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, seeded fifth, are taking on American shuttlers Annie Xu and Kerry Xu.
Sathish Kumar Karunakaran-Aadya Variath and BS Reddy-N Sikki Reddy will represent India in the mixed doubles.
