Luka Doncic hoping to make history with Slovenia in Tokyo 2020 bronze-medal match

After being edged 90-89 by France, Doncic's Slovenia will try to become the first team to win a basketball medal on Olympic debut since 1992 in the bronze-medal match.

Luka Doncic has been one of the stars of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic basketball tournament, but he couldn't prevent Slovenia going down 90-89 to France in Thursday's semi-final.

The NBA star recorded the third Olympic triple-double ever with 16 points, 10 rebounds and a mammoth 18 assists, in what was ultimately his first loss in international competition.

France had two huge performances from Nando de Colo and Evan Fournier to thank for their nervous victory, chipping in with 25 and 23 points respectively.

They will play the USA for a second time at Tokyo 2020 in Saturday's (7 August) final. The Europeans will be hoping for a repeat result of their shock 83-76 first-round victory over the gold-medal favourites.

Later that day Slovenia will take on Australia in the bronze-medal match, hoping to become the first basketball team to win a medal on their Olympic debut since Croatia (silver) and Lithuania (bronze) at the Barcelona 1992 Games.

One last dance for Doncic

Doncic has been on fire in Tokyo.

His 48 point-haul in Slovenia's preliminary match against Argentina was the second-highest individual total ever (tied with Eddie Palubinksas), behind Oscar Schmidt's 55 in 1988.

The Dallas Maverick's triple against France was just the third in Olympic history, and first since LeBron James at London 2012.

But Doncic has been more than a points machine. The 22-year-old's 50 rebounds are second only to teammate Mike Tobey, while his 50 assists and six blocks are currently unmatched.

European champions Slovenia will need their talisman to surpass even his own sky-high standards if they are able to beat a strong Australia side that went 3-0 in the preliminary matches before eliminating Argentina in the quarter-finals.
