Alpine skiing legend Lindsey Vonn had another taste of competitive racing in her return from retirement competing in two Super-G races at the FIS Fall Festival at Copper Mountain, Colorado on Sunday (8 December).
Her 24th and 19th place finishes seemed secondary for Vonn who was mainly hoping to secure some points in the lower-tier FIS event this weekend in order to qualify for the World Cup.
The 40-year-old finished the first Super-G race in 24th place, 2.19 seconds adrift compatriot Lauren Macuga, who was the fastest down the piste with a time of 1:11.90. In the second race, Vonn improved her position finishing 2.06s behind Macuga.
The Vancouver 2010 gold medallist returned to the starting gate for the first time in nearly six years the day before where she finished 24th and 27th in the two downhill races.
"While I’m sure people will speculate and say I’m not in top form because of the results, I disagree. This was training for me," wrote Vonn on the social media platform X after her two downhill starts on Saturday.
"I’m still testing equipment and getting back in the groove. This is only the beginning and the way I’m skiing is more important than the times at this point."
Vonn came up against a stellar field in Copper Mountain which included reigning world champion Marta Bassino, and Olympic medallists Federica Brignone and Michelle Gisin.
The 34-year-old Brignone is herself on an age-defying run making history at the end of October becoming the oldest woman to win a World Cup race with her victory in the season-opening giant slalom in Sölden, Austria.
