Head coach, Sarina Wiegman, has announced an 18-player Netherlands squad for the country's first taste of Olympic football, in what will be Wiegman's last major tournament with the Dutch women before she takes charge of England.

The Oranje Leeuwinnen (Orange Lionsses) will be on the hunt for gold after missing out at the World Cup in 2019, where they were narrowly beaten in the final by the ever-dominant USA.

Leading the squad from the front is Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema, who is the record goal scorer in the English Women's Super League (WSL).

The 24-year-old recorded yet another impressive campaign with the London club this season, bagging 18 goals and five assists in just 22 games.

An on-form Miedema is the key to the Dutch attack clicking, and could be crucial for their medal hopes.

On the left flank will be Lieke Martens who comes into the tournament on the back of winning the domestic treble in Spain with FC Barcelona.

Martens, and teammate Caroline Graham Hansen, were the wingers for Barça in the 2020/21 UEFA Women's Champions League final, and were heavily responsible for the first-half dismantling of Chelsea which set the platform for their victory.

The 28-year-old played through an injury during the World Cup that limited her effectiveness, but if she is able to replicate her club form at Tokyo 2020 she could prove to be a handful for defenders.

Also in the squad is Manchester United's midfield maestro Jackie Groenen, Dutch veteran Sherida Spitse, and PSV goalkeeper Sari Van Veenendaal who won the Golden Glove at the 2019 World Cup after an impressive tournament.

Weigman has also given call ups to youngsters Lynn Wilms and Aniek Nouwen who will be attending their first major tournaments with the senior squad.

After finishing runners-up at the World Cup in France two years ago, the Netherlands will be hoping to add to their 2017 European Championship title and give Weigman a golden send off.
