Maharashtra retain Khelo India Youth Games title
The state’s contingent won a total of 256 medals, a haul that included 78 gold, 77 silver and 101 bronze medals.
The contingent from Maharashtra ensured that there were no let downs as they defended their overall title with a rich haul of 78 gold, 77 silver and 101 bronze medals on the concluding day of the 2020 edition of the Khelo India Youth Games concluded in Guwahati on Wednesday.
The state side’s dominance was so evident that it left Haryana as a distant second with 68 gold, 60 silver and 72 bronze medals to their name.
There was no stopping the swimmers from the champion state on the final day of the events as they won a handful of medals to extend Maharashtra's lead on top of the medals table.
Swimmers set the pool ablaze
Competing in the Girls’ U-17 category, Kareena Shankta led a clean sweep of the podium by Maharashtra in the 200m breaststroke final. Shankta won the top prize in 2:4297 while Anushka Patil took the silver in 2:44.13. Zaara Jabbar won the bronze medal in 2:47.78.
Other winners from Maharashtra included Ariaa Sheth, who won a bronze the Girls’ U-17 1500m freestyle with a timing of 18:35.40, Vedant Bapna taking home the silver in U-17 Boys’ 50m backstroke final in 27.66 seconds and Aaron Fernandes winning the second place in U-21 Boys’ 100m freestyle final in 53.02 seconds.
There was more joy for Maharashtra on the final day of the Khelo India Youth Games as Snehal Mane and Mihita Yadav won the doubles gold on the tennis courts. Mane and Yadav had to fight it out the hard way as they rallied from a set down to beat the top seeds Sravya Chilkapudi and Sama Sathwika of Telangana 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 for the yellow metal.
Haryana dominates boxing
While Maharashtra went about their business without much fuss on the final day of the 2020 Khelo India Youth Games, Haryana too added a few medals to their tally on Wednesday.
The pugilists from Haryana dominated the boxing ring to win a total of 47 medals, a haul that included 15 gold and 15 silver medals. Maharashtra, meanwhile, had enough to cheer too as their boxers pocketed a total of 19 medals, which included six gold.
