Kelly Sildaru: From Youth Olympic gold to X Games glory in 7 days

It's been a wild ride for Kelly Sildaru.

A week after winning slopestyle gold at the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games in Switzerland, Sildaru was back on top of an X Games podium, winning the superpipe title in Aspen at her first attempt.

On her debut drop into the pipe the Estonian was as unfazed as ever.

With her confidence sky-high, Sildaru stormed the competition throwing down a right side 900 with a mute grab into an alley-oop 540, a right side 720 with a big tail grab and somehow fitting in a switch 900 right at the end of the run.

Diversity, height, transitions, spins in both directions: Sildaru does it all, and with style.

With Canadian skier Rachael Karker on 82 points, Sildaru scored 82.33, impressing the judges in the new the "overall impression" scoring system.

"I didn't expect that today," Sildaru told the Aspen Times.

"I just tried to enjoy tonight and that happened so I'm really stoked."

Sildaru: Back and better than ever

At 13 the Estonian sensation won her first X Games, at 15 many backed her to win gold at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics but a cruciate ligament injury nixed that and kept her out of competition for an entire year.

Now Sildaru has proved that she's back and better than ever winning slopestyle gold in Lausanne 2020 in Switzerland on Saturday 18th January before crashing the party at the Aspen X Games a week later.

Gold in the Superpipe ahead of 22-year-old Canadian Rachael Karker and Olympic gold medallist Cassie Sharpe in third, Sildaru proved that she's fighting fit and back to her frightening best once more.

It really is an incredible story from the girl born in a country with no mountains.

Not done yet

And Sildaru isn't finished yet.

It wasn't the dream start to the X Games for her, on Friday she finished just off the podium in the women's ski big air - fourth behind winner Tess Ledeux with PyeongChang 2018 slopestyle silver medallist Mathilde Gremaud second and gold medallist Sarah Hoefflin third.

The dream golden hat-trick at the Aspen X Games won't happen this year, but she may take a second gold in the women's slopestyle final later today.

Will anyone be surprised if she does?

Mark McMorris equals Shaun White's record

It was history in the making over in the men's snowboard big air as Canada's Mark McMorris won silver to match Shaun White's record haul of 18 Winter X Games medals.

Double Olympic bronze medallist McMorris finished second behind team-mate Max Parrot, and Sweden's Sven Thorgren took bronze.

Two-time running Olympic gold medallist Jamie Anderson was at it again winning women's snowboard slopestyle ahead of Canada's Laurie Blouin and Japan's Kokomo Murase.

And there were more Olympians on the podium in the men's snowboard slopestyle, another Canadian Darcy Sharpe topped the podium with Norwegian Mons Roisland second.

Olympic champ Red Gerard finished in the bronze medal position.
