The Japanese athlete, a silver medal winner in Lillehammer back in 1994, upset the form book to win with 391.6 points – his first victory since February 28, 2004. At 41 years, seven months and four days, he earned his place in the record books by beating Peter Prevc and Gregor Schlierenzauer – 20 and 17 years his junior respectively – to the top of the podium.

"I believe in my physical and mental strength,” said Kasai after his triumph. “It's a great day for me. I have no secret, of course I have a lot of experience and this is an advantage.”

Second placed Slovenian jumper Prevc signaled a return to form after fourth place in the Four Hills Tournament – while Schlierenzauer, the three-time Vancouver 2010 medalist and defending overall World Cup champion, achieved his first podium in a month in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
