Karsten Warholm, Jakob Ingebrigtsen sparkle at Norwegian nationals

Karsten Warholm won the 400m hurdles at the Norwegian national athletics championships on Sunday (20 September), in a time of 48.23 seconds.

The conditions at the NM Bergen 2020 meet were far from perfect on a cold and windy day in Norway, but there was plenty of excitement as a limited number of fans got to watch their hurdle hero on home soil.

They had hopes that Warholm might break the world record in the event, to add to his 300m hurdles world best at June's Impossible Games in Oslo.

But the Rio 2016 Olympian's time was well shy of his European record of 46.87s that was set in Stockholm a few weeks back.

19-year-old Andreas Joseph Dixon from the local Fana athletics club, where the event took place in Bergen, came closest to challenging Warholm.

The young Norwegian finished some five seconds behind in 53.61.

But 24-year-old Warholm, reigning World and European champion, was never in any danger of losing the race.

Ingebrigsten fights for win

Jakob Ingebrigtsen was given more of a run for his money in the men's 800m final.

He took victory in 1.48.72, just ahead of 20-year-old Sigurd Tveit, who crossed the finishing line in 1.49.08, with 21-year-old Didrik Hexeberg Warlo just behind him in 1.49.15.

It's a seventh Norwegian championship win for Ingebrigsten, who won the 1500m on Saturday.

He was a couple of seconds off his 800m personal best of 1.46.44, which was set at the Boysen Memorial in June.
