And for my next trick: Kamil Stoch claims Titisee-Neustadt victory ahead of Granerud

Three-time Olympic champion Kamil Stoch won the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup event a Titisee-Neustadt in Germany's Black Forest on Saturday (9 January).

Fresh off his third Four Hills Tournament win, Poland's champion jumped 139m and 144m for a total of 281.6 points to claim his 40th individual win.

Norway's Halvor Egner Granerud finished second with consistent 137.5 and 138.5 leaps, four points from Stoch.

Piotr Zyla completed the podium 10.8 points from fellow countryman Stoch.

Markus Eisenbichler finished fourth and Andrzej Stekala's 5th place made it three Polish jumpers in the top five.

Poland's 25-year-old leaper timed his first jump well and caught an up-draught to lift him to 143.5m, but a wobbly 134m second jump kept him off the podium.

And another Pole - Dawid Kubacki had a tough day as he fell from 1st to 7th between the two jumps.

After the jump Stoch was asked about the Hochfirst Hill:

"I really like it, it's a very old profile, it seems to be good to me, think it suits me well," he told FIS.

"I'm pretty happy with my jumps today, I'm a little bit sorry for Dawid because he got poor conditions but this is ski jumping."

"It was kind of tricky conditions," Stoch continued.

"It was changing all the time, it was backwards, forwards, from the side, so I'm happy to do some good ski jumping today."

With the second competition here tomorrow in Titisee-Neustadt, can we count on another Stoch win?

"I just focus on my own things to do in my own way," Stoch laughs.

Granerud, who won five World Cup competitions in-a-row before the start of the Four Hills Tournament, stays on top of the World Cup standings but Stoch is closing in, Eisenbichler stays second - just.

Kubacki loses it on jump 2

There was a cruel twist in the tale for Dawid Kubacki who jumped 143m for 141.9 points to put him in first place after Round 1. 

But a bad break with the wind on his second jump meant he fell flat on 120.4m and out of contention for the podium.

The entire Polish team had their heads in their hands in disbelief - including Stoch - as Kubacki jumped last.

He finished 7th.
