Olympic champ Justin Rose wins FedEx Cup but loses number one spot

Golfer Justin Rose earned the biggest cheque of his career on Sunday.

The Olympic champion from Rio 2016 finished tied for fourth at the season-ending TOUR Championship in Atlanta to win the PGA Tour FedEx Cup and 10 million US dollars.

Rose spoke afterwards of his rise from a desperate start to his professional career.

The Englishman came to prominence as a 17-year-old amateur with a fourth-place finish at the 1997 Open Championship.

But after turning pro, he missed 21 consecutive halfway cuts.

Rose perservered and finished top of the European Tour money list in 2007.

He won his first major title in 2013 at the US Open before claiming Olympic gold three years later.

Not quite a perfect Sunday

There was one disappointment for Rose with Dustin Johnson knocking him off the top of the world rankings.

Rose was number one for just two weeks as Johnson finished a shot ahead of him in third place on Sunday.

The return of the Tiger

Tiger Woods made most of the headlines in Georgia by claiming his first title for five years after a succession of personal and injury problems.

The 14-time major winner, who has had four back operations in recent years, won his 80th PGA Tour event by two strokes from Billy Horschel.

His victory was greeted with delight by the galleries at East Lake, and by the world of golf.

Ryder Cup beckons

Now attention switches to Paris where Rose and Fleetwood will line up for Europe against Woods and his American team-mates in the Ryder Cup starting on Friday.

The United States hold the trophy after beating Europe 17-11 at Hazeltine in 2016.

The two teams look evenly matched, but Woods will be keen to improve on his somewhat disappointing overall record of 14.5 points from 33 matches.
