India are placed in Group C along with Bangladesh and Thailand in the Junior Kabaddi World Championships 2023 to be held in Urmia, Iran from February 28 to March 4.

Sixteen teams, divided into four groups, will play in the second edition of the Junior Kabaddi World Championships. Home team Iran are in Group A while India’s rivals Pakistan are in Group D.

Iran are the defending champions. They went undefeated in the tournament and upstaged Kenya 42-22 in the final of the inaugural edition of the meet held in 2019, also in Iran. India skipped the kabaddi tournament.

Junior Kabaddi World Championships 2023 teams and groups

Group A: Iran, Chinese Taipei, Uganda

Group B: Kenya, Iraq, Palestine

Group C: Bangladesh, India, Thailand

Group D: Pakistan, Nepal, Georgia

The teams will play the group stages matches in a round-robin format. After that the top two teams in each group will qualify for the quarter-finals, to be held on March 2.

The semi-finals will be played on March 3, while the Junior Kabaddi World Championships 2023 final will be held on March 4.

India will play both their group matches on March 1. Their opener is against Thailand. A 15-member Indian kabaddi team, including three reserves, has been named for the Junior Kabaddi World Championships 2023. Ankush Rathee has been announced as captain.

The Indian team comprises seven kabaddi players who have played in the popular Pro Kabaddi league in India. These include Narender Kandola (Tamil Thalaivas), Jai Bhagwan (U Mumba), Ankush Rathee (Jaipur Pink Panthers), Manjeet Sharma (Dabang Delhi KC) and Sagar Kumar (Patna Pirates). Parteek Dahiya (Gujarat Giants) and Vinay Redhu (Telugu Titans) are in the reserves.
