Jinson Johnson makes the cut for World Athletics Championships
The middle-distance runner betters his own national record in Berlin
India’s middle-distance runner Jinson Johnson rewrote history on Sunday as he bettered his own national record at the 2019 ISTAF Berlin athletics event. T
he 28-year-old clocked a time of 3 minutes, 35.24 seconds finishing behind American Joshua Thompson to bag the silver medal at the Olympic Stadium.
Along with the medal, Johnson also clocked the required qualifying time for the World Athletics Championships to book his ticket for the Doha-based tournament to be held later in the month. The Kerala-born runner managed to achieve that feat just four days before the deadline for qualification for the Worlds.
Asian champion
The 28-year-old is the current Asian Games gold medallist in the 1500m category; and also has two Asian Championships medals to his name.
He participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics as well for India at the 800m distance, where he finished fifth in the heats and failed to make the cut for the semi-finals.
Johnson will now take to the track at the World Athletics Championships which begin from 27th September in Doha, Qatar.
