Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen will be looking to add a second BWF World Tour title this year at the Japan Open 2022 badminton tournament starting on Tuesday in Osaka, Japan.

Lakshya Sen, who bowed out in the round of 16 at the world badminton championships last week, will face local favourite Kenta Nishimoto in the opening round. The Indian shuttler is in the same bracket as All England champion Lee Zii Jia, 2018 Asian Games winner Jonatan Christie, former world champion Kento Momota and compatriot Kidambi Srikanth.

India’s HS Prannoy, who had defeated Lakshya Sen at the world championships, will look to continue his good form in the top half of the Japan Open 2022 draw.

Olympic medallist Saina Nehwal faces a tough opening challenge against newly-crowned world badminton champion Akane Yamaguchi in the women’s singles. Watch live streaming of Japan Open 2022.

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu is still recovering from an ankle fracture she sustained during her triumphant Commonwealth Games campaign and will skip the tournament.

World champion Viktor Axelsen has opted out of the Japan Open 2022, choosing to rest after suffering some injury during the world championships in Tokyo.
