Lee Zii Jia will play in his second of three straight badminton comeback tournaments this week at the BWF Japan Open 2023 from 25–30 July as he seeks to regain his very best form. The tournament is available to stream live on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com (territorial restrictions may apply).

After his first-round exit at last week's Korea Open 2023, this week's stop in Tokyo will provide Lee and new coach Wong Tat Meng a fresh opportunity to mark their progress against other players.

The world number 17, who has tumbled down the rankings after taking a month away from competition, will hope to finally return to winning ways ahead of September's Asian Games, where he will lead Malaysia's national team.

Lee's first opponent in Tokyo will be home shuttler Nishimoto Kenta in a meeting of two unseeded players. The Malaysian holds a career 5–1 record against his Japanese opponent and will fancy his chances of moving on.

Third seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand is the potential roadblock in round two. The Thai has enjoyed a successful season with three final appearances and two World Tour titles, and will pose a tough task on current form.

Should Zii Jia make it to the last eight, Indonesia's Jonatan Christie is likely to lie in wait.
