Italy have won the World Athletics Relays 4x400m mixed relay final in Silesia, Poland, just a day after securing their qualification for Tokyo 2020. The athletics mixed relay, which will make its Olympic debut this summer, is one of the most eagerly anticipated additions to this year's Games.
The final saw Italy storm into a halfway lead through Edoardo Scotti and Giancarla Trevisan. It was a position they never looked like relinquishing, with Alice Mangione running a strong third leg and David Re holding onto first place as Brazil and Dominican Republic upped the pressure on the final lap.
Second place went to the Brazilians, with Anderson Freitas Henriques, Tiffani Silva Marinho, Geisa Aparecida Coutinho and Alison Dos Santos running home in 3:17.54, while Dominican Republic took the final spot on the podium as Lidio Andres Feliz, Anabel Medina Ventura, Marileidy Paulino and Alexander Ogando posted a time of 3:17.58.
Italy had only secured their qualification for the Olympic Games during Saturday's heats, where 23 teams across all relay disciplines booked their spots in Tokyo by merit of qualifying for Sunday's finals. They will join countries that have already qualified due to their performances at the Doha 2019 World Championships and 16 other teams who will be allocated spots through the World Athletics top performance lists on 29 June 2021.
