India’s PV Sindhu suffered a straight games defeat to Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu-Ying 18-21 12-21 at the Musahino Forest Plaza in women’s badminton singles.

The Rio 2016 silver medallist lost her 14th career match against Tai Tzu-Ying, who is the second seed at Tokyo 2020. Sindhu has only won five matches against the 27-year-old.

It must be noted that Sindhu had defeated the same opponent at Rio 2016 round of 16 in straight games 21-13 21-15.

Sindhu stated that she is disappointed with the outcome of the semi-finals but added that she gave her best. However, things didn’t work out in her favour as it wasn’t her day.

In the first game, Sindhu was very much in the mix, edging through at times but Tai Tzu-Ying’s quality shone through in the end. The second game saw Tai Tzu-Ying take control of the proceedings as she made the most of the crosscourt acute-angled drop to leave Sindhu gasping across the court.

“I’m a bit sad because it's the semifinals, but I tried my best, it's just not my day. I fought until the end,” said Sindhu to Badminton World Federation (BWF) in the aftermath of the loss.

The 26-year-old was candid enough to accept that the level of the semi-finals was not going to be easy as this was the first time at Tokyo 2020 that she dropped a game. Interestingly, she pointed out that she was well prepared for the world number one’s skillset.

Sindhu last registered a win against Tai Tzu-Ying back in 2019 in the World Championship final. However, in the previous three meetings (not including the result at Tokyo 2020), Tai Tzu-Ying has clearly dominated her rival from India.

“I was prepared for her skills, so I don't think that troubled me a lot. At the end of the day the level of the semifinals is going to be really high you can't expect easy points. I just couldn't be on the winning side," she mentioned.
