ATK Mohun Bagan beat Bengaluru FC 4-3 in a penalty shootout to win the Indian Super League ( ISL) 2022-23 title at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Goa on Saturday. This was the Mariners’ maiden ISL title after ending runners-up in the 2020-21 season at the same venue.

The ISL final went into a penalty shootout after the two teams were tied at 2-2 after extra-time. Dimitri Petratos (14’, 85’) scored for ATK Mohun Bagan while Sunil Chhetri (45’) and Roy Krishna (78) netted for Bengaluru FC in regulation time.

However, the Blues stumbled in the shootout, with Bruno Ramires and Pablo Perez missing from the spot.

As the match panned out, the Blues had most of the chances in the opening exchanges of the game but it was ATK Mohun Bagan who took the lead in the 14th minute. Dimitri Petratos stepped up and scored from the post after Roy Krishna was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

Bengaluru FC made it 1-1 after ATMB’s Subhashish Bose brought down Roy Krishna in the box. Sunil Chhetri stepped up and got the Blues back on level terms with the last kick of the first half.

After the restart, Both teams started at a slower pace with the chances coming few and far between. In the second half, it was Krishna who put BFC into the lead with a 80th-minute header. The lead, however, didn’t last for long as ATKMB won another penalty in the 85th minute. Petratos, once again, converted from the spot to bring Juan Ferrando’s men back in the game.

Ultimately, the two teams could not be separated after an action-packed 90 minutes, as the game moved into extra-time with the score tied at 2-2. The extra-time, too, could not provide a winner as both sides had to contend with penalties to declare a champion.

In the shootout, both sides scored their opening two strikes before ATKMB goalkeeper Vishal Kaith denied Ramires. ATKMB scored all four of their penalties and Bengaluru’s Pablo put the final strike over the bar which sealed the victory for the Ferrando’s men, and confirmed the Kolkata side their maiden ISL title.
