Clement Mignon was in a class of his own at IRONMAN France in Nice on Sunday (25 June).
The 24-year-old was in third place after the 180.2km (112-mile) bike ride in the gruelling triathlon race, almost three minutes behind leader Cameron Wurf and Denmark's Kristian Høgenhaug, but quickly made up ground on the front pair.
Høgenhaug moved clear of the Australian veteran, but Mignon was on the charge and took the lead before the halfway point of the deciding marathon run of 42.2km (26.2 miles).
Wurf was left in second when Høgenhaug - who had led after the opening 3.8km (2.4-mile) swim - abandoned the race, but was passed by Belgium's Bart Aernouts at the 30km mark.
Mignon, the winner of the World Triathlon Long Distance title last month in Ibiza, continued to set a fierce pace at the front and crossed the finish line in glorious isolation in eight hours, 17 minutes and 40 seconds.
Aernouts was six and a half minutes back in second with German Jonas Hoffman taking third as 39-year-old Wurf, who rides for professional cycling team INEOS Grenadiers, faded badly in the last 5km.
The top three also earn the right to return to Nice for the men's race of the IRONMAN World Championships on 10 September, the first time the event will be held outside its spiritual home of Kona, Hawaii.
