The Indian Premier League (IPL) returns for its 14th edition from April 9. Reigning and a record five-time champions Mumbai Indians, captained by Rohit Sharma, face Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore in the blockbuster opening match at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
While the last edition of the T20 cricket tournament was held in UAE due to COVID-19 concerns, IPL 2021 is all set to be played in India. Watch the IPL 2021 live in India!
Six neutral venues – Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Delhi and Bengaluru - will play host to the league matches but the eliminators, qualifiers and final will be hosted exclusively at the newly-inaugurated Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad.
The final will be played on May 30.
Most of the matches start from 7:30 PM IST with the exception of the 11 doubleheaders. On the days there are two matches scheduled, the first starts at 3:30 PM IST.
There have been some big personnel changes in this season’s teams compared to last season. During the IPL 2021 auction, South African all-rounder Chris Morris became the most expensive player in IPL history with his Rs 16.25 crore worth move from Royal Challengers Bangalore to Rajasthan Royals.
Aussie all-rounder Glenn Maxwell shifting camp to Royal Challengers Bangalore from the Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab) was another headline maker. His move was worth Rs 14.25 crores.
IPL 2021 T20 cricket tournament format
The eight participating teams – Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings (previously Kings XI Punjab) – will engage each other twice in a round-robin format during the league phase.
Each team, however, will play at only four out of the six venues during their league fixtures.
The top four teams at the end of the league matches move onto the IPL playoffs. The top two face off in Qualifier 1 with the winner progressing directly to the final.
The third and fourth-placed teams play each other in the Eliminator and the winner of the match faces off against the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2. The winner of the Qualifier 2 becomes the second team in the final.
