The 141st IOC Session officially got underway with a star-studded opening ceremony at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai on Saturday.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Mumbai for a special visit to inaugurate the ongoing edition of the IOC Session, which will be conducted from October 15 to 17. This is only the second time in history that an IOC Session is being held in India. New Delhi, back in 1983, hosted the first.

The IOC Session, held at least once every year, is the general meeting of the members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Important decisions regarding host cities for upcoming events, inclusion or exclusion of sports and federations and changes in the Olympic Charter are made at the IOC Sessions. These sessions are the IOC’s supreme organ and decisions made at these meetings are final.

IOC president Thomas Bach is also in India for the session.

The star-studded guest list included Olympic champions Neeraj Chopra and Abhinav Bindra, world champion boxer Nikhat Zareen, Indian tennis legend Leander Paes, a bronze medal-winner from Atlanta 1996, and Tokyo 2020 wrestling medal winner Bajrang Punia.

Indian hockey icon PR Sreejesh, a member of the Indian hockey team which clinched a historic bronze at Tokyo 2020, was also in attendance. The veteran goalkeeper recently helped India win the gold medal at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China.

The likes of Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt also added some Bollywood stardust in the mix.
