The Intercontinental Cup 2023 football tournament will run from June 9 to 18 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. All the matches will be broadcast live in India.
The upcoming tournament will be the third edition of the Intercontinental Cup, which replaced the Nehru Cup starting 2018. The Indian men’s football team upset Kenya to become the inaugural champions in 2018 while North Korea clinched the crown in 2019 by beating Tajikistan.
Returning after four years, the Intercontinental Cup 2023 will feature four football teams - India, Lebanon, Mongolia and Vanuatu.
Lebanon, 99th in the latest FIFA men’s football team rankings, are the highest ranked side in the Intercontinental Cup 2023 followed by India at 101st. Vanuatu and Mongolia are ranked 164th and 183rd, respectively. India have never faced Mongolia or Vanuatu before in an international football match.
Under head coach Igor Stimac, India are on a five-match winning streak at home.
The format of the Intercontinental Cup 2023 will see all the four teams play each other in a single-legged round-robin format. The top two teams after all the round-robin matches will face off in the final on June 18.
Lebanon and Vanuatu will face off in the tournament opener on Friday while hosts India take on Mongolia later on the same day.
For Sunil Chhetri and Co, the Intercontinental Cup 2023 will serve as crucial practice ahead of the SAFF championship in Bengaluru from June 21 to July 4.
India are also scheduled to play the marquee AFC Asian Cup 2023 in Qatar in January next year.
