Indonesia's Anthony Ginting on the friendship pushing him to the top

Anthony Sinisuka Ginting is no stranger to winning.

As a young badminton player, the Indonesian clinched bronze at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing and has continued to collect medals throughout his senior career.

Now Ginting has his eye on the ultimate prize when he makes his Olympic Games debut in Tokyo, and shared his desire exclusively with Olympic Channel.

Ginting is seen as one of the rising stars in Indonesia.

He has racked up four titles since his rookie season on the world tour circuit in 2015, two of those were earned by defeating two-time world champion Momota Kento in the finals.

The 24-year-old does not want his age to be a hindrance for success, as he strives to achieve success early on in his career.

Badminton joined the Olympic bouquet in 1992 and Indonesia's Alan Budikusuma clinched the inaugural men's singles gold medal.

In fact, three of the four players on the podium were Indonesians with Ardy Wiranata winning silver and Hermanwan Susanto bronze along with Denmark's Thomas Steur-Lauridsen. Back then both the defeated semi-finalists were awarded a medal.

In 2000, Hendrawan missed out on the top spot after losing to China's Ji Xinpeng but four years later in Athens, Taufik Hidayat got the job done and emerged Olympic champion.

Since then however, the south east Asian nation has not won a medal of any colour in the men's singles category.

The country is hoping that Ginting, along with this best friend Jonatan Christie, can change that. Both youngsters have been steadily progressing up the world rankings and are earmarked to be medal contenders when they make their Olympic debut in Tokyo.

Their friendly rivalry could be the key that unlocks that further Indonesia success at the Games, pushing each other forward to help both achieve their high goals.
