Olympic silver-medallist Mirabai Chanu will skip the national weightlifting championships that starts Tuesday at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala.
Mirabai Chanu, who represents the Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB), is the reigning women’s 49kg national champion.
Mirabai Chanu had won silver in the women’s 49kg weightlifting at the Tokyo Olympics. It was the first medal for India at the Tokyo Olympics and kick-started the country’s most successful haul of seven medals at a single Olympics.
The 2018 Youth Olympics gold-medallist Jeremy Lalrinnunga will hope to bounce back from a knee injury to defend his men’s 67kg title at the national weightlifting championships. He represents the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB).
“I could start proper training only four weeks ago. I hope I can give my best and this knee injury doesn't trouble me during the event,” Jeremy told The New Indian Express.
The 18-year-old Jeremy Lalrinnunga had narrowly missed out on a spot at the Tokyo Olympics after finishing fourth in the world junior championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in May.
Jeremy has been struggling with a knee injury since the Asian championships, also held in Tashkent, in April.
The junior and sub-junior national weightlifting championships will also be held alongside the senior nationals, a four-day event, at NIS, Patiala.
