India’s tennis stars Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna will open their women’s and men’s doubles campaigns, respectively at the Cincinnati Masters on Tuesday.
Former doubles world No. 1 Sania will team up with Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the women’s doubles while Rohan Bopanna will partner Croatia’s Ivan Dodig in the men’s.
Sania will be competing in her first event after the Tokyo Olympics where the 34-year-old paired with Ankita Raina. The Indian duo lost their opening match to Ukraine’s Nadiia Kichenok and Lydumyla Kichenok 6-0, 6(0)-7(7), 8-10.
On Tuesday, Sania-Ons will take on Veronika Kudermetova of Russia and Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the opening round at the Cincinnati Masters.
In the men’s doubles, the Bopanna-Dodig pair will be up against Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic and France’s Fabrice Martin in their opening round.
The Indo-Croatian pair was knocked out of the Canadian Open quarter-finals last week. They lost to Joe Salisbury (Great Britain) and Rajeev Ram (USA) 4-6, 6-3, 10-4.
Should Bopanna and his Croatian partner advance, a stern test from third seed Juan Sebastian Cabal, world No. 9, and Robert Farah, world No. 7, awaits in the second round. The finals will be held on Sunday, August 22.
