Sania Mirza has revealed that she had tested positive for COVID-19 in the new year but has now recovered.
In an emotional Instagram post on Tuesday, the Indian tennis legend stated that she didn't have any major symptoms but it was difficult to be in isolation away from family, especially her two-year-old son Izhaan.
“It was scary as you aren't very sure what to expect and hear so many different things and stories. You get a new symptom every day and the uncertainty of it is extremely hard to deal with not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well,” Sania Mirza wrote on Instagram.
“I can't even imagine what people and their families are going through when people are sick in hospital all alone and by themselves.
“This virus is no joke, I took all the precautions as I could but still contracted it,” Sania pointed out.
Many Indian sportspersons had tested positive for COVID-19 in the past year – including Vinesh Phogat, Saina Nehwal, Parupalli Kashyap, HS Prannoy, and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy – among others.
Olympic medallist Saina Nehwal, her husband Kashyap, and Prannoy even faced a lengthy ordeal at the Thailand Open last week – Nehwal and Prannoy returned a false positive and were asked to withdraw from the tournament, as was Kashyap as he was in close contact with Saina.
They were only allowed to play only after a second round of tests, which turned out to be negative.
Shuttler Prannoy also spoke out about the challenges of recovering from COVID-19 last week, revealing that the challenge was mostly mental and that the body became weak due to medication.
“Mentally, you are very stressed for two weeks, because you don’t know what’s going to happen, and doctors aren’t able to tell you either,” Prannoy had told ESPN.
“I’ve had a weird pain in my ribcage, but everything looks normal on an X-ray or MRI. There are side-effects, and you are on heavy medication, which makes your body weak.”
