As many as 57 Indian shooters will be seen in action at the first ISSF World Cup of 2021, which begins at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi on Thursday.

The ISSF World Cup will offer Olympic ranking points for rifle and pistol shooters, and youngster Anish Bhanwala will be hoping to earn enough to earn a ticket to Tokyo 2020.

Skeet shooter Usman Chand, the lone shooter from Pakistan at the ISSF World Cup, will also be looking to make the most of his opportunity after being given a visa to travel only last week.

The 18-year-old Anish Bhanwala, a 2018 Commonwealth Games gold-medallist, is currently ranked 12th in the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol rankings and can boost his chances of a maiden Games appearance if he clinches gold.

The ISSF World Cup in New Delhi will be the first international event of 2021 for 13 of 15 Indian shooters who have already won a quota place for the Tokyo Olympics.

Divyansh Singh Panwar and Elavenil Valarivan, the top-ranked shooters in the 10m Air Rifle men’s and women’s, respectively, are in the Indian squad for the ISSF World Cup.

The tournament will also serve as good preparation for other medal favourites Manu Bhaker, Saurabh Chaudhary and Abhishek Verma.

Skeet shooters Angad Bajwa and Mairaj Ahmad Khan, who won a team bronze at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Cairo last month will be looking for better performance in the individual events this time around.

China, Japan and Germany, among others, have decided to give the event a miss while the England and Brazil shooting squad will be raring to go after serving a mandatory one-week period of hard quarantine in New Delhi.
