Shiva Thapa into semi-finals at national boxing championship

Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Mohammad Hussamuddin and youth world champion Sachin Siwach also notched wins in the quarters.

Indian boxers Shiva Thapa and reigning youth world champion Sachin Siwach sailed into the semi-finals of the men’s national boxing championship 2021 on Sunday.

Representing Assam, Shiva Thapa, a five-time Asian championships medallist and London 2012 Olympian, beat Ankit Narwal of the Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) 4-1 in the 63.5kg. Shiva Thapa is the defending champion in the category.

However, RSPB had some joy later on as Sachin Siwach (54kg) beat Goa’s Roshan Zamir 5-0 and Asian championships bronze-medallist Varinder Singh (60kg) too beat Inderjit Singh by unanimous decision.

Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Mohammad Hussamuddin, playing for the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB), outboxed Maharashtra’s Rushikesh Gaud to enter the 57kg semi-finals.

The last four will be played on Monday at the Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS) in Bellary, Karnataka. Losing semi-finalists will win bronze medals.

The men’s national boxing championships, now in its fifth year, has competitions in the 48kg, 51kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 63.5kg, 67kg, 71kg, 75kg, 80kg, 86kg, 92kg, and +92kg weight categories in accordance with AIBA rules.

The winners at the nationals will represent India at next month’s world boxing championships in Serbia and will also train at the national camp
