World No. 45 CA Bhavani Devi will be vying to make a mark in her maiden Olympics when fencing action gets underway at the Makuhari Messe Hall on Saturday.

Bhavani realised her Olympics dream by bagging one of the two spots available for Asia and Oceania through Adjusted Official Ranking method at the Fencing World Cup in Budapest in March.

As part of her preparation for Tokyo, the Chennai fencer trained with the Italian national team under coach Nicola Zanotti at Livorno, Italy since April this year.

Bhavani’s international career as a fencer started with a black card (disqualification) when she turned up three minutes late for her match in Turkey in 2007.

Since then, the 27-year-old has achieved a number of feats which includes becoming the first Indian fencer to win a gold at the 2018 Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Canberra. Bhavani had overcome Scotland’s Catriona Thomson in the semi-final and England’s Emily Ruaux en route to the medal.

Fencing will start from July 24 and run till August 1 at the Makuhari Messe Hall. A total of 12 gold medals are up for grabs in this discipline. The fencers compete in three categories - foil, epee and sabre. Bhavani Devi will compete in the individual sabre event.

Bhavani’s campaign in Tokyo will begin on Day 3 (July 26) and the Indian will be looking to ride high on her recent achievements. The finals will take place later the same day.

The individual events in foil and epee consist of three rounds of three minutes each and the first to reach 15 points or with most points at the end of three rounds is declared the winner.

Sabre is played in two periods with a break when the first fencer reaches eight points.
