PV Sindhu could retain her world title until 2022
Indian ace won the world championships gold in 2019 and with no world meet in sight till 2022, she could continue her reign until the next edition.
Indian badminton star PV Sindhu may be in for an extended reign as the world champion.
The championships is an annual event organised by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) that crowns the world champions in each of its five categories every year - except the one that in which the Olympics is held.
Now with the Tokyo Olympics pushed to 2021 due to the coronavirus outbreak, the competition might not find a place in the 2021 calendar.
First Indian shuttler to win world title
In 2019, PV Sindhu became the first Indian to win the world title after she registered a convincing win over Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in a one-sided encounter that lasted just over the 30-minute mark.
In Basel, the Indian badminton player was in her element as she dropped just one game en route to her title triumph, thus helping pump in a new lease of life into a season that seemed to go nowhere until that point.
Known for her big-competition temperament, PV Sindhu barely let the occasion get the better of her at the world championships as she was at her attacking best, keeping her opponents guessing throughout.
Even against the world no. 1 Tai Tzu Ying in the quarter-finals, PV Sindhu hardly let the nerves get the better of her as she rallied after dropping the opening game to win the match and make it to her third final on the bounce at this stage.
The silver medallist at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, PV Sindhu, however, couldn’t build on that momentum as a quarter-final finish at the French Open Super 750 event was her best show post the Worlds.
The Indian badminton ace will be eager to put her indifferent form on the backburner when badminton resumes post the pandemic as she continues her preparations for the Tokyo Games.
