Home gyms and baby partners: How Indian athletes keep fit

The lockdown has encouraged athletes to try out new skills and be more inventive with their routine while others have taken it to the next level.

The national lockdown in India due to the coronavirus has brought out the creative side of people to the fore, with many taking the time to learn new skills or try their hand at routine household chores.

Athletes have been no different and with the lockdown in the country extended for a further fortnight than originally planned, some Indian sporting stars have made their workout routines more intense.

And some have been outright innovative.

Baby trainer

While the time off has given athletes some quality time to spend with their kids, something they would not have had if normal procedures were followed, it seems that some have discovered that babies make great training partners.

Case in point, Indian wrestler and Olympic medallist Yogeshwar Dutt and boxer Nikhat Zareen.

Fellow Indian boxer Jyoti Gulia tried a similar trick, but her son seemed an unwilling participant.

Couples workout

Rio 2016 bronze medallist Sakshi Malik and her husband, fellow Indian wrestler Satyavrat Kadian, are pushing each other on with workouts together.

The pair shared a video of their intense training session together. Great job guys!

Punia hits the heights

Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia is also ensuring that he stays in top form during lockdown.

The 26-year old is still hitting impressive heights at home and is ensuring his physique remains in tip top condition.

From skipping training to skipping for training

Skipping usually is not the answer to life’s problems, be it responsibilities at work or at home. However, the scenario is not quite the same for Indian athletes.

The lockdown may have kept them inside their homes but many of them do have access to a rope and are happily jumping away while it passes under them (in some cases twice or thrice).

Keeping it simple

The situation outside is a lot complicated as it is, so Indian shooter Apurvi Chandela and Indian badminton star Ashwini Ponappa have decided to go back to the basics to keep up their fitness.

While her neighbours might be a little annoyed with the routines, Ashwini Ponappa’s partner certainly did not seem to mind!

The ones who can’t stay away

One would think that athletes would cherish a break, even an enforced one, to take their minds off the sport.

However, that is the difference between us mere mortals and sportspersons who truly love what they do, so much so that Achanta Sharath Kamal, Rani Rampal and Abhishek Verma have gone on and created their own playing areas at home.
