Two-time Olympian Atanu Das, who won his place back in the national team through trials, will spearhead the Indian challenge at the Archery World Cup 2023 in Antalya, Turkey starting Tuesday.
India have sent a 16-member contingent - eight men and eight women - for the season’s first global outdoor event. Veteran Olympian Tarundeep Rai and world championships silver medallist Jyothi Surekha Vennam will also be in action.
The Archery World Cup involves competitions for both recurve and compound archers. The winners of the individual events will automatically qualify for the Archery World Cup Final to be held in Hermosillo, Mexico in September.
While recurve archer Atanu Das is competing, his wife Deepika Kumari missed out after failing to win her place through trials held in SAI Sonipat in February. Men’s compound archer Abhishek Verma will be another top name missing from action.
Apart from Atanu Das and Tarundeep Rai, Dhiraj Bommadevara, who topped the trials, and youngster Neeraj Chauhan make up the Indian men’s recurve archery team. Jyothi Surekha Vennam will be India’s top challenger in compound archery.
More than 390 archers from 52 countries will compete in the Archery World Cup 2023 Stage 1 in Antalya. The event will conclude on April 23.
