The Indian women's hockey team will aim to start the year on a positive note when it faces South Africa in a four-match Test series at the University of Cape Town from Monday.

Former captain Rani Rampal will be making her comeback to the Indian squad after being sidelined due to injury for the most part of 2022. Goalkeeper Savita Punia, however, will continue to lead the side in South Africa while the experienced Navneet Kaur will be her deputy.
In December, Savita Punia led India to victory at the inaugural edition of the FIH Women's Nations Cup in Valencia, Spain. The win earned India a promotion to the FIH Pro League 2023-24.
For the South Africa tour, women’s head coach Janneke Schopman has shown faith in the uncapped youngster Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalkethe, who led the Indian women's junior team at the Uniphar U-23 five-nation tournament 2022 in May.
Baljeet Kaur, who made her senior debut in the FIH Women's Hockey Pro League 2021-22 match against Belgium, has also been selected in India’s 22-member squad for the seven-match tour.
