India’s medal tally reaches 40 at South Asian Games

Indian athletes continued to dominate the rest of the competition in Nepal.

India's medal haul at the South Asian Games continues to grow as they took their tally to forty on the second day of competition in Nepal.

India’s athletics contingent kicked off the day by adding four gold, four silver and two bronze medals to the country’s tally at the Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu.

Ajay Kumar Saroj and Ajeet Kumar clinched gold and silver respectively in the men’s 1500m race, while in the women’s category, Chanda won silver while P U Chitra captured the bronze.

In the women’s 10,000m race, Kavita Yadav won silver while in the 100m sprint, Archana Suseendran left the rest of the pack in her shadow to conquer gold for India. In the men’s High Jump event, Sarvesh Anil Kushare and Chetan Balasubrahmanya won gold and silver, respectively.

South Asian Games shooting gold

The Indian trio of Mehuli Ghosh, Shriyanka Sadangi and Shreya Agrawal bulldozed the rest of the competition in the women’s 10m Air Rifle team as well as the individual category.

The trio won gold in the team even and locked up the podium in the individual category, thereby adding four medals to India’s tally. It was Ghosh who won the gold in the individual category, while Sadangi and Agrawal won silver and bronze respectively.

In the men’s 50m Rifle 3 Position event, India took home the gold on the back of a record-breaking performance from Chain Singh. The Indian shooter broke the South Asian Games record by scoring 1179/1200, giving him the top prize in the event. Compatriot Akhil Sheoran wasn’t far off and settled for silver.

More medals in Taekwondo

After winning nine medals in taekwondo yesterday, the Indian contingent won four more medals in the event, taking India’s tally to 13. Kashish Malik won gold in the women’s 57 kg event, while Radha Bhati captured bronze in the women’s 46 kg event.

Over on the men’s side, Kanha Mainali and Prithvi Raj Chauhan won a bronze in the men’s 54 kg and 68 kg event respectively.

.Anjul Namdeo added another bronze to India’s tally by finishing third in the Men’s Chan Quan Thaulo in the martial art of Wushu.

Top of podium in table tennis and volleyball

Volleyball saw more success coming India's way as both the men's and women's teams topped the podium.

Hosts Nepal were edged out 3-2 by the Indian women's team, with the men's team coming from a game down to defeat Pakistan 3-1.

South Asian Games gold was captured by both the men's and women's table tennis teams also.

India's men prevailed 3-0 over Nepal whilst the women's team cruised to victory by the same scoreline against Sri Lanka.
