Olympic champion Veddriq Leonardo came out on top in the men’s big final on the second day of the IFSC Madrid 4 Speed sport climbing competition on Sunday (20 October).

The Indonesian speedster’s victory comes a day after he finished third in the test event using four lanes instead of the usual two.

Sunday’s competition was back to the usual format with Leonardo winning the two-lane final against compatriot Rahmad Adi Mulyono.

Leonardo scaled the wall in a time of 5.06 seconds with Adi Mulyono slapping the buzzer just 0.08s behind him.

Long Jianguo, Saturday’s winner of the four-lane event, again found his way to the podium winning the small final by the narrowest of margins. Long out-touched Italy’s Matteo Zurloni by just 0.002s with a winning time of 5.052s.

The women’s big final was an equally close affair with Zhang Shaoqin beating her Chinese compatriot Zhou Yafei by a hair’s breadth. Zhou won the title in a time of 6.78s, beating Zhou by 0.14s.

Nurul Iqamah of Indonesia denied the Chinese delegation a clean sweep of the podium winning the small final in a time of 6.95s. Wang Shengyan reached the top of the wall in a time of 7.00s to fall painfully short of a medal.
